GigE Vision

GigE Vision (Gigabit Ethernet for Machine Vision) is an interface standard for high-performance Machine Vision cameras. It allows for fast image transfer using low cost standard cables over very long lengths. With GigE Vision, hardware and software from different vendors can interoperate seamlessly over GigE connections.

The AIA (Automated Imaging Association) oversees the ongoing development and adminstration of the standard. Experts from STEMMER IMAGING were significantly involved in creating this standard.

It is important to understand that GigE Vision per se only defines a communication protocol and does NOT define any vision related functionality like FireWire's DCAM does. This means that GigE Vision only allows the camera's registers to be read and to stream the data, but it does not define, for example, how to enable the data to be streamed. All vision functionality is defined through GenICam.
