Binning

Binning denominates a technique where the intensities of neighbouring pixels on a sensor are combined.

Binning can either be done along one axis or in both directions. With line scan cameras however, only horizontal binning is possible. In this case the sensor is clocked with two or more combined pixels.

The advantages of binning are that the luminous sensitivity and the signal-to- noise ratio are raised while noise is reduced. Binning is therefore especially suitable in difficult light situations. Furthermore the combination of pixels reduces the integration time and increases the frame rate.

A disadvantage of binning – which can be important depending on the application – is the reduced spatial (or in case of line scan cameras horizontal) resolution which goes along with the combination of pixels.
