Depth of Focus

Region in which the image of an object appears to be sharp in the direction of the optical axis.

The optical properties of the optical components means that the depth of focus depends on the relative aperture and is greatest at the smallest aperture. Aperture selection thus always represents a compromise between depth of focus and light intensity. The depth of focus and the focal length are also interdependent. A lens with a short focal length (wide-angle) generally has a greater depth of focus than a lens with a longer focal length (telephoto lens).
