Sensor Types

There are two main types of sensor technology used in vision cameras, CCD and CMOS. CCD’s can be further categorised into 3 different architectures: frame transfer, full frame, and interline transfer. There are many different CMOS architectures with widely varying complexities and performance characteristics.

The size of a sensor is often shown in fractions of an inch. This sizing convention is a legacy from the days of the early Vidicon tubes and these sizes do not correspond to an exact physical dimension of the sensor. This same size convention - measured as a fraction of an inch - is also used by lens manufactures.
