Ideally, the connection between a camera and the frame grabber or PC interface card can be made using a standard "off-the-shelf" cable. The simplest type of video cable is the 75-Ohm coaxial cable using BNC connectors. This type of cable is frequently used when no triggering is required and when the camera is powered by a separate power supply.
In practice however, this is only rarely the case. Very often, the planned camera/frame grabber combination or the constraints of the particular industrial environment means that a special cable is required. In many cases, the transmission of the analogue or digital signal needs to be complemented by the additional bidirectional transfer of synchronisation and control signals between the frame grabber and the camera. This is made possible by means of ‘Hirose’ connectors which are identical on most camera models from a large number of manufacturers and which also allows the use of a power supply. As a result, it is often possible to support various camera operating modes with just one cable.
Our cable production facility boasts highly-experienced experts in cable preparation and construction. They ensure the very highest quality of both standard and specialist cables that are shipped from our cable production facility every day. Despite this, all of our cables are tested before being supplied to the customer. We use a CAMI Cable-Eye-2 cable tester, both to check the correct functioning of the point-to-point connections and to run a complete short-circuit test procedure to check all possible combinations of contacts and document screening. In its most advanced development level, Cable-Eye-2 uses 2 x 128 independent measurement points and is therefore able to cover all of the cable types usually used in image processing applications.
For special diagnostic operations we are able to identify the transition resistance automatically in the individual lines on a point-by-point basis, in order to simplify troubleshooting. This makes it possible for us to identify irregularities in the cable lines. Specialist test equipment allows us to check all the different types of connectors that are used. This includes the full range of DSUB connectors, MiniDeltaRibbon types, HalfPitch-DSUB (similar to SCSI), HIROSE types plus many others.
If required, we can also connect customer-specific cable systems to our in-house frame grabbers via specially made adapters, enabling us to perform dual inspections. As a result, you can always be sure of the quality of our cables!
