Sensor Types

There are two main types of sensor technology used in vision cameras, CCD and CMOS. CCD Sensors can be categorised into different architectures.

CCD’s can be further categorised into 3 different architectures: frame transfer, full frame, and interline transfer. There are many different CMOS architectures with widely varying complexities and performance characteristics. The size of a sensor is often shown in fractions of an inch. This sizing convention is a legacy from the days of the early Vidicon tubes and these sizes do not correspond to an exact physical dimension of the sensor. This same size convention - measured as a fraction of an inch - is also used by lens manufactures.
