Multi-camera inspection technology on show at MACH 2016

STEMMER IMAGING is showing a multi-camera packaging inspection system, to determine print quality, read alphanumeric and barcode data and check fill-level as open boxes of sweets pass along the conveyor belt. STEMMER IMAGING’s extensive knowledge of vision technology allows the most appropriate camera type and data transfer standard to be selected for the individual inspection task and linked into a single system.

3D triangulation

Fill levels are determined by 3D triangulation methods using a high speed C4-2040 GigE Vision 3D camera from Automation Technology and laser line illumination. The high resolution and high speed capabilities of the camera mean that height profiles can be acquired with a resolution of 2048 pixels per profile and at up to 380 profiles per second.

The integrated C4 processor detects the height-profile of the top layer of the sweets with a sub-pixel precision of up to 1/64 of a pixel without losing speed. This combination of parameters allows the fill levels to be determined with high accuracy even at high conveyor speeds.

Barcode and OCR reading tasks

The Genie Nano-M1920 from Teledyne DALSA is used here to perform a wide range of barcode and OCR reading tasks. This camera benefits from the high performance Sony Pregius IMX249 2.3 Mpixel (1920 x 1200) CMOS sensor for exceptional image quality.

Genie Nano cameras also feature Teledyne DALSA´s TurboDrive technology which allows image data to be transferred for processing at rates greater than normally possible with GigE Vision. This brings fast and inexpensive data transfer over distances up to 100 m, using mass market Ethernet components and CAT-5e and CAT-6 cables to allow faster applications to be accommodated using GigE Vision.

Colour inspection

The JAI GO-5000-USB camera is shown carrying out colour inspection of the packaging materials. This camera utilises the increasingly popular high speed USB3 Vision data transfer interface and provides a remarkable combination of high resolution, fast frame rate, small size, and low weight.

JAI’s unique, high performance 2560 x 2048 pixel CMOS imager provides 5-megapixel images at up to 62 frames per second, allowing full colour inspection of packages moving at high speeds.

Image acquisition

Image acquisition from all the cameras is carried out using STEMMER IMAGING’s own Common Vision Blox (CVB 2016) imaging toolkit which supports acquisition for USB3 Vision and GigE Vision and other transmission standards.

CVB's high-speed, memory - efficient acquisition is a result of STEMMER IMAGING’s active participation in industry bodies such as the Genicam committee, GigE Vision and USB3 Vision groups. This means that users wanting multiple inspection capabilities are not limited to a single camera interface type.
